Wish comes true with the millionth meal

Delhi-based NGO, Wishes and Blessings celebrated the serving of its 10th Lakh meal at the Modi Mills Day Care Centre. The NGO's Daily Meals Programme was initiated in 2015 to provide three nutritious meals daily to the homeless and underprivileged in Delhi NCR. Started with only 60 beneficiaries in December 2015, the programme now has over 550 beneficiaries of all ages and backgrounds.

Wishes and Blessings believes that an empty stomach is a devil’s playground. People resort to begging, stealing and other crimes in order to meet their hunger. The NGO aims to eradicate this problem by providing wholesome meals to lesser privileged people.

Speaking on the birth of the Daily Meals Programme, Founder and President, Dr. Geetanjali Chopra said, “In December 2014, I was out on our first winter drive under 10Fridays~10 Drives, a project where we go across Delhi/NCR to distribute relief to the homeless to help them survive the harsh drop in temperature. While distributing relief in a rainbasera in Nizamuddin, I saw a little girl probably 7 to 8 years, uncombed hair and dried tears streaked across her face, sleeping with half a roti in her hand. It seemed as if she had fought with all her life to get that piece of roti, and had fallen asleep, exhausted after her tussle. It was then that I decided that I have to do something for those who struggle to find even one meal to fill their stomach.”

“The 10th lakh meals may seem like a small number, but for all of us at Wishes and Blessings, it is indeed a wish which is fulfilled after years of hard work and perseverance. When I initiated the programme, I could never have imagined that we would reach this number so quickly. But of course, this is a small step towards eradicating hunger and malnutrition amongst the underprivileged, and I look forward to making many more steps towards ensuring that no underprivileged person goes to sleep on an empty stomach.”

Wishes and Blessings beneficiary 11 years old Sanjay (name changed) said, “I used to play with other kids in the Nizamuddin locality, and some of the bigger kids got me into the habit of smoking chillum. But then didi came and got us into this centre where we now study and get yummy food too. Now, I have seen many changes in me, including interest in studies. I can speak English, play well and have developed good habits."

The occasion saw performances by the street children supported by the organisation. The Chief Guest Sh. Narendra Kumar (Election Commissioner, UTs) and Guest of Honor Sh. B.K. Singh, Additional Commissioner of Police and Mandira Lamba, Chairperson YFLO were also present on this occasion. Further, many Government officials, corporates, and HNIs marked their presence and appreciated the efforts of the organisation.
